When a filter breaks, glass fragments
are driven backward, not away, and
the thin metal ring can deform under
impact, sometimes becoming difficult to
remove without tools.
There are few accessories in photography as stubbornly misunderstood
as the UV filter. It is often bought together with a new lens,
screwed on immediately, and rarely removed again. Not because it
demonstrably improves the photograph, but because it promises something
else: protection. A thin circle of glass that stands between
the lens and the world, quietly reassuring its owner that the front
element is now safe.
That reassurance, however, is largely an illusion. UV filters were once
introduced for a specific reason. Early color films were sensitive to
ultraviolet radiation, particularly in high-altitude or maritime environments,
where excess UV light could lead to haze and reduced
contrast. In that context, a UV filter made technical sense. It was
corrective, not protective. As film emulsions improved and coatings
evolved, that function became largely redundant. On modern color
film, and certainly on black-and-white film, the UV component is
either negligible or already accounted for in the emulsion design.
Yet the filter remained. Its role quietly shifted from optical correction
to psychological insurance.
The idea is simple: if something hits the lens, it will hit the filter
first. If the filter breaks, the lens survives. This sounds reasonable,
until one considers the mechanics involved. Glass does not absorb
impact; it fractures. When a filter breaks, it does so directly in front
of the lens’s most vulnerable surface. Glass fragments are driven backward,
not away, and the thin metal ring can deform under impact,
sometimes becoming difficult to remove without tools. In real-world
accidents, cracked filters have frequently done more harm than
good.
Protection, in a mechanical sense, requires absorption and distance.
A rigid, brittle surface provides neither.
What actually protects a lens in daily use is far less glamorous: a
rubber lens hood.
A lens hood performs several tasks simultaneously. First, it does
what it was originally designed to do: control stray light. It reduces
flare, preserves contrast, and maintains tonal separation. That alone
makes it optically useful, far more so than a UV filter ever was after
the 1960s. But more importantly, a rubber hood functions as a
shock absorber. When a lens is bumped, placed down too abruptly,
or brushed against a hard surface, the hood takes the impact. It
compresses, flexes, and disperses force away from the front element.
It also creates distance. The glass sits recessed, no longer the leading
edge of the lens. Distance is protection.
Photographers who have worked extensively with rangefinders,
reportage lenses, or older Nikkors often know this intuitively. A
battered rubber hood, frayed at the edges, tells a story of use. It is
evidence of contact with the world, of a lens that has been where
photography actually happens. The front element behind it, paradoxically,
often remains pristine.
The persistence of the UV filter as “protection” has less to do with
physics than with anxiety. Lenses have become expensive, sometimes
absurdly so, and the fear of damage grows in proportion to
the price tag. The filter offers a simple ritual: screw it on, and worry
less. That ritual is comforting, even if it is ineffective.
This is where the conversation shifts from equipment to psychology.
Photography has always carried a tension between control and
exposure. Cameras promise precision, predictability, mastery. But
the act itself requires vulnerability. You go out, you move, you risk
missing the moment or damaging the tool. Accessories like UV
filters often function as symbolic armor, a way of maintaining the
illusion that the world can be safely mediated through glass.
Analog photography, in particular, does not reward this illusion. Film
cameras age. Brass shows through chrome. Rubber hardens, cracks,
and wears. These changes are not failures; they are evidence of use. A
lens hood that bears marks is not a liability. It is doing its job.
There is also an optical cost to placing unnecessary glass in front of
a lens. Even the best filters introduce additional surfaces: air to glass,
glass to air. Each surface carries the potential for reflections, contrast
loss, and flare. Multi-coating mitigates this, but it does not eliminate
it. In difficult light, backlit scenes, or night photography, a filter can
quietly undermine what the lens itself was designed to render.
Removing the filter restores the lens to its intended optical state.
Using a hood preserves that state while adding genuine protection.
None of this suggests that lenses should be treated carelessly. On
the contrary. The point is not bravado, but honesty. If protection is
the goal, choose the tool that actually provides it. If reassurance is
the goal, acknowledge it as such.
There are, of course, exceptions. In environments where corrosive
substances, salt spray, or industrial debris are unavoidable, a sacrificial
front element may be a pragmatic choice. But those situations are
specific, not general. They are the exception that proves the rule.
The everyday use of a UV filter as a default protective measure persists
largely because it is easy, visible, and commercially reinforced. It
feels responsible. A rubber hood, by contrast, looks almost careless.
It suggests movement, proximity, risk. It does not promise safety; it
enables engagement.
In that sense, the choice between a UV filter and a lens hood mirrors
a larger choice in photography. Do you interpose barriers between
yourself and the world, or do you accept contact? Do you optimize
for preservation, or for presence?
The rubber hood does not pretend to be elegant or invisible. It
simply does the work.
